About Us

The creation of the College began in the first years of the government of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, with the restoration of secondary specialized education in the country and the training of national teaching personnel. The rapid growth of general education schools and the increasing number of pupils created a great need for teachers able to teach in the Azerbaijani language.

To this end, the Baku Men's Teachers' Seminary was opened, and it was led by Rəşid bəy Əfəndiyev . Subsequently, the leadership of the seminary was entrusted to Pənah Qasımov . He brought renowned intellectuals of the era such as Hüseyn Cavid, Abdulla Şaiq, Soltan Məcid Qənizadə, Üzeyir bəy Hacıbəyli and Müslüm Maqomayev into the teaching process.

In a short time, strict discipline and a high standard of teaching took shape at the school, and its reputation spread as far as the neighboring republics. The commission assessing students' knowledge found only 40 of them worthy of continuing their studies. Of these, 9 became the first graduates in the 1922/23 academic year and were sent to various regions of the country as teachers.

In 1920, the Darulmuallimat – a women's teachers' seminary – was established in Baku. Its director was Mədinə xanım Qiyasbəyli, and its head of studies was Gövhər xanım Qayıbova . Huseyn Javid, Uzeyir Hajibeyli, Abdulla Shaig and other renowned teachers taught here. The fact that 120 girls received education in their native language became a significant event in the life of Azerbaijani women.

In 1925, 16 girls received teaching certificates in the school's first graduation, and in 1926 another 40. Women educated here, such as Mirvarid Dilbazi, Şəfiqə Qiyasbəyli, Ümidə Qafarzadə , rendered great services in the fields of education and culture.

In 1926, the two seminaries were merged and named the Baku United Pedagogical Technical School. In 1927, the merged school held its first graduation — 105 graduates began working in various regions. These educational institutions played an important role in shaping Azerbaijani enlightenment and the training of national pedagogical personnel.
